Worker threw bins at emergency stop button to save arm

A South Australian employer that failed to guard a conveyor belt on a processing machine has been fined $66,500, after a worker's arm became caught in a pinch point, and he had to throw bins at the emergency stop button to stop the machine.

A South Australian employer that failed to assess the risks of retrieving documents from a loft has been fined $80,000, after a worker fell through the ceiling. Two South Australian employers with inadequate or no safety procedures have been fined a total of $108,000, after an overseas student worker's leg was amputated, and a labour-hire worker sustained crush injuries.

BHPB failed to act on 1962 asbestos risk, worker awarded $360k

BHP Billiton Ltd has been ordered to pay a former worker, who now has mesothelioma, nearly $360,000, after the South Australian District Court rejected its claim that in the early 1960s it didn't have "actual knowledge" that low asbestos exposure was hazardous.
