Employer not negligent in failing to regularly inspect stairs

Employers aren't required to conduct weekly physical inspections of non-slip strips on stairs, the Western Australian Court of Appeal has ruled in rejecting an injured worker's damages claim.

Safety fines and prosecutions to increase in WA

Maximum fines for some breaches of Western Australia's Dangerous Goods Safety Act and other legislation could be doubled to reflect "community expectations", while resources employers that have had a serious safety incident in the last three years are being advised to prepare for a visit from the prosecutor.

WA could shun WHS Act in favour of OSH overhaul

Western Australia is more likely to overhaul its 30-year-old OSH Act - to include such concepts as the PCBU - than introduce mirror WHS laws, according to a workplace health and safety lawyer. The State Government says it will reveal its plans soon.

High Court allows injured worker to pursue second payout

An injured Western Australian worker, who received $250,000 in an out-of-court settlement with his employer, has been given the green light to sue a second company, after a High Court majority found the settlement didn't "amount to an award of damages".
