Australia's first Code of Practice for the mental health of fly-in-fly-out workers, which includes valuable information for multiple industries, has been finalised and released in Western Australia. Meanwhile, a regulator has urged employers to prepare for impending changes to regulations for a hazardous substance.

Employers need to put in place far more comprehensive management plans for handling mental health emergencies in FIFO workplaces, according to one of 18 recommendations from a major new study on the mental health of FIFO workers.

Two amendment Bills increasing Western Australia's maximum work health and safety fines, to well above those for reckless conduct in the harmonised jurisdictions, have passed Parliament, and could take effect within days.

A draft Code of Practice on protecting the mental health of fly-in-fly-out workers has been amended to reflect the reporting requirements of WHS laws, clarify that it is useful for multiple industries and include the internationally recognised definition of mental health.

WHS consultants, lawyers and occupational hygienists will have an explicit duty to ensure their services don't create health and safety risks at client sites, if recommendations on the development of a harmonised WHS Bill are adopted in Western Australia.
