New firefighter cancer Bill a "slap in the face" for volunteers

The South Australian Government today will formerly introduce its workers' comp cancer Bill for career firefighters, which, unlike a nearly identical Greens Bill currently before Parliament, provides no cover for the State's 13,500 firefighting volunteers. Also in this article, Unions NSW has declared today "Fair Go for Workers' Compensation Day".

Asbestos register flagged as worker killed at NBN site

Federal Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten will introduce a Bill today to establish an asbestos register for workers and others who believe they could have been exposed to the material, while WorkCover NSW is investigating the death of a worker at an NBN rollout site.

Inquiry advises retaining journey claims and definitions of worker, injury

The inquiry into the Queensland workers' comp scheme has recommended retaining journey claims, common law claims and the current definition of "injury", and warns that vulnerable groups could slip through the cracks under a plan to narrow the meaning of "worker".

Narrower "worker" definition in workers' comp Act supported by Dept

Queensland is likely to press ahead with its plan to narrow the definition of "worker" in the State workers' comp Act, with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General dismissing submissions that oppose the proposed amendment.

The South Australian Greens have applauded the passing of their workers' comp Bill for firefighters through the Legislative Council, while the State Government has introduced mirror heavy-vehicle laws.
